One of the flavors you’ll often hear attached to stouts is “coffee”. This is justified, as the roasted barley used in its creation lends all sorts of roasty flavors which are very reminiscent of coffee. Lagunitas Cappuccino Stout takes this a lot further with intense coffee flavors competing with a wonderful, malty sweetness, and a great base of thick mouthfeel to complement it all. It really is quite tasty. Now for the details of the brew!
Aroma: Sweet malt, bitter and roasty notes in the nose. Not a tremendous amount of hops, but they could be blending in with the roasty notes I’m getting.
Mouthfeel: An excellently viscous mouthfeel. Just begs to be rolled around the tongue!
Flavor: I do love this beer. Initial impression is sweetness from the malt. Residual sugars have got to be playing some part in the wonderful mouthfeel of this beer. After the sweetness, the gorgeous coffee notes become apparent, first as a bitterness, and then as a perfect roastyness that makes me immediately think of some great espressos that I have enjoyed. The coffee flavors linger through the finish, and it’s really quite a beer.
Overall: Man, this is such a fantastic beer, but it’s definitely not a session beer. It’s big, big, big! I couldn’t drink it all the time, as it would overpower most foods, it wouldn’t mesh well with a lot of different beers. As a standalone, dessert beer, it’s a perfect, big beer. So flavorful, rich, malty, and full of espresso flavors. I’ll have it again, certainly!
